PSA: I saw a guy in Denver last week using a torch to heat his stock for a twist. Just stop it.
Three years ago I tried that shortcut on a gate hinge and the grain went all wrong. Use the forge. It heats the whole piece, not just the outside. Anyone else see this junk and want to yell?

Yeah, the grain going all wrong is the worst. I had a buddy try to heat-treat a knife blade with a propane weed burner once, and it came out looking like a topographic map.

Read a forum post about someone trying to temper with a kitchen oven and getting the same wavy grain. They just didn't get it hot enough for a proper austenitize before the quench. Makes you respect the guys with real heat treat ovens even more.
