Old timer at the flea market made me question my whole anvil setup
Last Sunday I was picking up a used cross pein at the flea market outside Austin and this retired farrier, must've been 80, watched me test the rebound on my anvil. He said my anvil was too solid, not enough flex, and that I was losing half my hammer energy to the stand. I laughed it off until I got home and checked my stand, it's a solid 6x6 oak post buried in a bucket of concrete. He said to swap to a laminated stand with a leather pad and bolt it loose so it can dance. Has anyone else run their anvil on a rigid setup and then changed to something softer? I'm half tempted to rebuild mine this weekend.
