I was reading a book on old trade guilds and found out that in 18th century London, a blacksmith's apprentice contract was often for seven years, which is way longer than I thought.
Has anyone else run into surprising historical facts about the trade in their reading?

Yeah, the seven year thing is wild... but what got me was how they could be punished for just leaving. I read that some masters could have runaways jailed. Makes you think it was less about learning and more about cheap labor for all that time.

Seems a bit dramatic. People signed contracts back then too.

Totally agree, that's the part that really hits hard. It shows how the whole system was built to trap people. Calling it training or learning feels like a cover story when the reality was forced work with no way out. The threat of jail for just wanting to leave proves where the real power was.
