I finally quit mixing my quench water by feel after a Tuesday that cost me a knife
I was in my garage shop in Akron last Tuesday quenching a 1084 hunter and pulled it out at what I swore was the right shade of orange, dunked straight into my bucket like always, and heard that dull tink instead of a ping. Blade had a crack running halfway up the edge and I just stood there holding two days of work. A guy at the local guild meeting kept telling me to grab a cheap magnet and watch the shadow leave the steel, and I finally tried it on the next blade instead of trusting my eyes. Three quenches later, zero cracks, and I felt like an idiot for arguing with him. Anyone else here still eyeballing it, or did you all switch to a magnet forever ago?
