Had to pick between a coal forge and a gas forge for my first setup
I went with gas because I was worried about smoke in my neighborhood. But after 6 months I realized the gas bill was gonna eat me alive. Local blacksmith near Columbus told me coal is actually cleaner if you run it right. Now I'm saving up to switch. Anyone have luck switching after starting with gas?

Is it just me or does every hobby have this hidden cost that sneaks up on you? I started with an electric kiln for pottery thinking it was the easy way and my electric bill went through the roof. Now I'm learning about wood firing which is a whole different monster. You're right though about coal being cleaner when tuned right. I've noticed that with a lot of things like how a properly seasoned wood stove burns way cleaner than a crappy gas fireplace. It's like the simpler old tech actually works better if you care about it. Good luck with the switch man, sounds like you're making the right move.

Man, my first gas forge bill made me actually check if someone was siphoning propane from my tank at night. You'll love coal once you get the hang of it though, way cheaper in the long run.
