Can we talk about the temp swing in that forge at the St. Paul meetup?
I was at the regional hammer-in in St. Paul last Saturday and noticed the gas forge was running a good 150 degrees hotter on the left side than the right, so if you were working near the middle of the fire you probably got inconsistent welds without even knowing it.

Yeah that left side was way off, I scorched three good blades before I figured it out.

Three blades, ouch. I started marking the left side with a little scratch from a file before I even put it in the jig. That way I can feel it with my thumb and know which way to angle it without guessing. Also helps to only do one pass on that side at a time, check the burr, then flip. Saves me from burning through another good piece of metal just because I mixed up my left from my right.
