Watched a mystery series with subtitles on by accident, blew my mind

I've been binge watching The Bridge on Hulu and somehow had the subtitles turned on at episode 4 without noticing. Turns out I've been missing half the whispered dialogue and background clues in Nordic noir for years, the writing is way sharper than I thought. Has anyone else had a show click into place once you switched to subs, or am I just slow on the uptake?

Subs blew my mind" is a stretch when you admit you only noticed at episode 4, you liked the show fine for three episodes without them. Maybe the writing wasn't hiding anything and you just weren't paying close enough attention.
