My buddy swears The Wire is the greatest show ever made and I finally watched all 5 seasons to prove him wrong, but now I owe him an apology
Last month my friend Dave cornered me at his place in Baltimore, where he actually grew up, and gave me his whole speech about how The Wire is untouchable. I pushed back hard because I usually hate when people call a slow show a masterpiece, and I told him Breaking Bad laps it in every way. He just said watch all five seasons before you run your mouth. So I did, about an episode a night for six weeks, and somewhere around season 3 with the whole Stringer and Avon thing I stopped taking notes on why I was right. The thing that got me was how half the stuff I called boring in season 2, the whole docks storyline, ended up mattering way more later, which never happens on shows I usually binge. Dave also pointed out that I quit Ozark twice in season 1 for the same slow burn reason, so maybe I just have no patience and call it good taste. I still think the first three episodes are a rough sell for anyone new, but I was wrong about the rest. Has anyone else gone into a show fully planning to hate it and gotten completely turned around?
