TIL my torque wrench habit was wrong for carbon steerers

A guy at the shop in Boulder told me I was over-tightening carbon steerer tube plugs, saying 'you're just making a stress riser' (his exact words). I used to crank my Park Tool TW-5.2 to the max spec, like 6 Nm, every time. After that, I started doing a two-step process: snug it at 4 Nm, ride it once, then check it again. Anyone else have a different method for carbon assembly that goes against the printed numbers?
