Remember when we used to true wheels by feel?
I spent 20 years just using a spoke wrench and my thumbs, but last month I finally broke down and bought a $40 truing stand from a shop closing in Detroit. Has anyone else switched to a stand after decades of doing it the old way?

Oh man, I finally switched after a guy at a swap meet told me his stand was from a 1970s bike shop that went under. Now I just use it to hold the wheel while I stare at it and still end up truing by feel anyway.

And see I went the opposite direction entirely. I had a Park Tool stand for years and it just sat in the corner collecting dust because I kept going back to the fork mount on my workbench. There's something about having the wheel bolted solid to a frame that gives me a better sense of where the rim is actually at versus a stand that wobbles a tiny bit. Plus my stand would always drift the caliper arm when I breathed on it wrong, drove me nuts. So I sold it last summer and just use a zip tie taped to the fork leg now, cost me like 12 cents.
