I finally figured out I was over-torquing my crank bolts for years
After snapping my third Park Tool hex key on a crank arm last month, I checked the spec sheet a shop guy gave me and realized I was cranking down to 50 Nm instead of 35 Nm. What tipped you off that you were doing a common job wrong?

Torque wrenches are a scam in their own way but people don't realize you actually need to back off the click a second time. Most click types store a bit of extra tension if you just stop at the first click, so you're adding a few Nm without knowing it. Double checking with a beam style for final tightening would save a lot of busted tools and stripped threads.

Hmm, I've never had that issue with my click type (been using it for years) and it's always been dead on.
