Flat repair in a parking lot made me carry a spare tube everywhere

Last month I was fixing a tire outside a gas station in Tulsa and snapped my only tire lever clean in half. The guy parked next to me handed me a little metal one he'd had in his truck for like 15 years, said it never lets him down. After using it, I ordered a set of the same style and now I keep one in my jersey pocket, one in the saddle bag, and one in the car. Has anyone else had a tool fail at the worst moment and switch brands over it?
