Rant: dropped $180 on a burr grinder last month and my coffee still tastes like hot dirt
Bought a Baratza Encore because everyone online swears it fixes sour coffee. Ground on setting 14 like the manual says. Water at 200 degrees. Weighed 15 grams of beans on a scale that cost more than my first car. Still sour. Still bitter. Still tastes like I'm drinking the smell of a wet dog.
Wife asked why I'm standing at the counter staring at the grinder at 6am like it owes me money. Told her I'm troubleshooting. She said it looks like I'm praying.
Grinder's fine I think. Might be the beans. Might be me. Anyone else buy the thing everyone recommends and end up right back where they started, just poorer?
Man, I used to be the guy telling everyone the grinder was the answer. Spent years saying "fix your grind first" whenever someone posted about bad coffee. Then I got a decent grinder myself and learned the hard way that it mostly just makes bad beans taste more clearly bad. Sounds like your beans might be old or roasted too light, which reads as sour no matter what you do. Fresh beans from a local roaster with a roast date on the bag changed more for me than any gear ever did. What beans are you using and when were they roasted?
