I called pour over gear a waste of money until my $12 garage sale kettle fixed my coffee
Two weeks ago my buddy Dave bet me 20 bucks that I could not taste the difference between my drip machine and his pour over setup, so I tried it with his gooseneck kettle and a cheap scale. The first cup I made was flat and sour, but once I slowed my pour down to about 3 minutes the same beans tasted way sweeter, and now I feel silly for trashing all that gear for so long. So what is the one cheap thing that changed your coffee more than any fancy machine did?
Is a few seconds of pour time really the difference between sour and sweet, or did Dave just finally get you to pay attention? I'm not saying the kettle did nothing, but bet money has a way of making people taste whatever they're told to taste.
