DAE go back and forth on weighing beans vs just scooping them?
When I got my Baratza Encore 2 years ago I weighed every single dose on a $20 scale, down to 18.0 grams, because some guy on YouTube swore it made a real difference. Lately though I've been eyeballing it with the scoop that came in the box and honestly my morning cup in my kitchen in Boise tastes about the same, so now I'm torn on whether the scale is worth the extra 30 seconds. Am I fooling myself here, or has anyone else tested this side by side and actually noticed a difference?
So what actually changed for you between the scale days and the scoop days? I ask because I went through the same thing and the real question isn't grams vs scoops, it's whether your beans changed too. When I was weighing every dose I was also buying from a local roaster every week, and once I started grabbing the big bag from the store to save money, that mattered way more than 18.0 vs 18.4 grams ever did. The scale mostly matters when you switch beans a lot, because scoop size changes with how the beans sit in the bag and how dark they're roasted, so you can drift a couple grams without knowing it. If you're drinking the same beans every week, your tongue learns the taste and your scoop probably lands close enough anyway, so the 30 seconds might just be buying you peace of mind, which honestly is still worth something.
