A photographer in Austin made me question my whole posting schedule

I've been posting at 6pm sharp every Tuesday and Thursday for about 8 months now, all based on some growth hacker video I saw. But last weekend at a coffee shop, this photographer who shoots concerts told me he just posts whenever he feels like it, like 2am on a Sunday sometimes, and his engagement is actually higher. He said the algorithm cares more about whether people stick around to read your caption than when you hit send. That hit different because I've been treating timing like a religion and ignoring the actual content quality. I checked my last 10 posts and sure enough, the ones I wrote in a rush at 5:55pm had way lower save rates than the ones I spent an hour on. So now I'm wondering if anyone else has ditched the strict schedule for a more flow-based approach and still seen growth, or am I just trading one myth for another? Has anyone else experimented with posting at weird random times and compared the numbers?

I did the exact same thing for almost a year, alarms set and everything, then got burned out and just started posting whenever a post actually felt done. My save rate went up about 40 percent over two months, and weirdly my best performing post went live at 11pm on a Saturday. Turns out people scroll at all hours and the algorithm just wants to see if they stop and read. The rushed posts were always my worst ones, timing never saved them.
