Why is finding a plain old coupon code such a nightmare now?

I spent almost 2 hours trying to find a working coupon code for a $35 order of dog food, and every site I clicked was just a wall of ads and fake buttons. I tried 6 different codes and not one of them worked at checkout, then the site wanted my email just to show me more codes that also didn't work. It was a 15 minute job that turned into my whole evening, and I still paid full price like a chump. Does anyone have a real method for finding codes that actually work, or is the whole thing just a scam these days?
