Tried running my old Zip drive off a USB adapter and it ate my only copy of a 1998 demo reel
So I've got this Iomega Zip 100 drive from high school that still spins up fine, and I figured I'd finally pull the old files off it using one of those cheap USB to parallel adapters from Amazon. Twelve bucks, three week shipping, no manual. I plug it in and Windows 11 actually sees it, which should have been my first clue something was off. I click the disk icon and the whole thing locks up for about 40 seconds, then the drive starts making this clicking noise like a tiny robot choking. Next thing I know, the disk ejects itself and the label is warm to the touch. I put it back in my old beige tower and it just clicks forever. Gone. That disk had my senior year video project on it, 200 megs of skateboarding footage and a Nirvana song I'm not proud of. Turns out those USB adapters feed the drive weird power and the read heads can slam into the platter if the timing is off. Anyone know a shop in the Midwest that can still do clean room recoveries on Zip disks, or am I just buying the same disk on eBay and pretending it's mine?
