My 2009 netbook booted faster with a $4 SD card than with the SSD I put in it
Last month I got bored and dug my old Asus Eee PC out of a bin in the garage. The plan was to drop a cheap 64GB SSD in it, since that is the obvious move for making old hardware feel new again. The SSD worked fine but boot times sat around 55 seconds, and it ran hot enough that the fan never shut up. On a whim I flashed a light Linux distro onto a $4 microSD card and ran it straight off the card reader instead. Boot time dropped to 22 seconds and the thing stayed cool the whole evening. Turns out the SSD was bottlenecked by the old SATA controller on that board, while the SD slot was wired faster. So the newer, pricier part lost to the dumb cheap one. Anyone else run into old hardware where the outdated port somehow beats the upgrade?
