Found out the first webcam watched a coffee pot at Cambridge and I can't get over it
I was killing time on a slow Tuesday reading old computer history pages and ran into the story of the Trojan Room coffee pot at Cambridge University. Back in 1991 some researchers got tired of walking down the hall just to find an empty pot, so they pointed a camera at it and piped the feed to their desks over the local network. What got me is that it stayed online until 2001, so this thing ran for like a decade before anyone thought to call it a webcam. It blows my mind that the first live camera feed on the internet was basically a workplace annoyance fix. Did any of you ever run into one of those old always-on camera setups at a job or school?
