Watched my basil get fried on the west side of my balcony for 3 weeks before I figured out it was the afternoon sun, not my watering

I moved my two basil pots to the west railing back in June and they went limp by 2pm every single day, so I doubled my watering and they just got worse. Then last Tuesday I touched the railing itself at 3pm and it was so hot I pulled my hand back, and it hit me that the plants were basically sitting on a griddle, not drying out from thirst. Anyone else had to deal with hot railings or walls cooking their pots from the side, and what did you put under them?
