Wasted $45 on those self-watering balcony pots that claim to fix overwatering

I bought four of those plastic self-watering pots from a garden center downtown thinking they'd save me from killing my cherry tomatoes again. Turns out the wicking system barely works in direct sun on a concrete balcony because the water just evaporates before it reaches the roots. My basil drowned in one pot and my pepper plant dried out in another within 3 weeks. Has anyone else had luck with a specific brand or should I just stick to drilling my own drainage holes in regular pots?

Oh you mean those things that promise to water your plants for you but actually just turn them into science experiments? Yeah, I fell for that trap too, ended up with a tomato plant that looked like it was trying to drown itself in its own tears. The whole wicking thing seems like a great idea until you realize it's basically just a fancy way to give your plants root rot or bone dry dirt depending on the mood of the universe that day. I swear those pots are designed by someone who's never actually tried to grow anything on a hot balcony in July. Just drill your own holes and call it a day, at least then you know the water's actually going somewhere useful.

Wait are you me @julia843? I had almost the exact same thing happen with my cherry tomatoes last summer, the wick just dried out before any water got to the dirt.
