Used to ignore my balcony garden, now I can't stop

I went to visit my aunt's place in Chicago last weekend and she's got this tiny balcony packed with tomato plants and herbs growing out of old coffee cans. She told me she started during the lockdown and now she's hooked, spending every morning out there checking leaves and watering. It got me thinking, has anyone else found that once you get past the first few fails, balcony gardening just clicks and becomes this daily habit you actually look forward to?

The watering schedule is what gets most people. You either drown them or forget for three days. I killed four basil plants before I figured out the finger test. Stick your finger in the soil up to the second knuckle. If it's dry, water. If it's damp, leave it. Once you nail that, everything else falls into place. Plus morning light is better than afternoon for most herbs. Less scorching.

Wait, you killed four basil plants before you figured this out? That's wild, I can't imagine sticking with it through that many failures. I messed up one spider plant and almost gave up on houseplants forever.
