Unpopular opinion: those expensive self watering balcony planters are a waste

I dropped $120 on a set of three self watering planters from a brand everyone raves about. After two months, the wicking system failed and my tomato plants got root rot from sitting in stagnant water. Has anyone else had better luck with basic clay pots on your balcony?

Yeah the wicking systems always fail for me too, clay pots with a saucer work way better on my balcony.

Bet my balcony looks like a plant graveyard compared to yours. Clay pots and saucers are the only thing keeping my herbs from staging a walkout. Maybe I should just stick to concrete planters and call it a day.
