Thought I'd save money making my own potting mix, ended up burning $50
Mixed my own blend with that cheap bagged soil from the grocery store and it came loaded with fungus gnats. Had to toss everything and buy proper stuff anyway. Anyone else learn the hard way that cutting corners on soil is a bad idea?

Right? I once spent more on gnat traps than I did on the actual soil.

Borrowed a neighbor's shop vac once just to try to suck the little bugs out of the air and it barely did anything. Makes me wonder if half the stuff we buy for gardening is really just paying to feel like we're in control of things that don't want to be controlled. You see the same pattern in home repairs and car maintenance too, people buying expensive gear just to make a small problem feel manageable. It's like we're all just tricking ourselves into thinking we've got a handle on the chaos.

Ngl, it's bugs in the air, not a demonic possession, maybe it's not that deep.
