That $60 self-watering planter box was a total bust for my balcony
That $60 self-watering planter box was a total bust for my balcony. Back in April I got excited about one from a big online store, figured it would be perfect for my tiny 4x6 foot balcony in Austin. Spent about $60 on it, plus another $15 for the potting mix and a couple of tomato seedlings. First two weeks were great, then the water reservoir clogged up with some algae and the top soil stayed soaked while the roots sat in a puddle. Both plants got root rot and died within a month. I took it apart to clean it and the little wicking feet were just too flimsy for the weight. Now I'm back to cheap $8 clay pots with a saucer and I water everything by hand every morning. Has anyone else had luck with a different brand of self-watering setup, or should I just stick with the old school method?
