Rant: I wasted $80 on that fancy self watering planter
Bought one of those self watering balcony planters last spring thinking it would save me time. Turns out the water reservoir got clogged in like 3 weeks with my balcony dust. My tomato plant started looking sad and when I checked the bottom it was just stagnant water with bugs. Anyone else ditch those overpriced systems and just go back to basic pots with saucers?

Stagnant water with bugs" sounds like my ex's apartment, maybe stick to basic pots.

Stagnant water with bugs" yeah that's rough but honestly I'm wondering how long you let it sit before checking the bottom. Were you just topping off the water without ever looking inside the reservoir or did you actually try to clean it out before the bugs showed up?
