My tomato plants survived a 3 day heatwave, barely

Last week in Austin we hit 104 degrees and my balcony turned into an oven. I had 6 tomato pots and 2 of them completely wilted by noon on day 2, even with morning watering. I rigged up a shade cloth from an old bedsheet and moved the pots against the north wall, which saved the other 4. Has anyone else dealt with balcony temps getting way higher than the forecast, and what do you use to cool things down?
