My neighbor's "just shove a fan in the window" advice backfired hard

My neighbor Bill swore tomatoes only need good airflow, so I skipped the trellis and put a box fan aimed at my cherry tomato plant on the balcony. Three weeks later, the stems were all bent sideways like a bad haircut and every green tomato got blown clean off. I counted 14 little tomatoes rolling around the planter, and one even landed in my coffee mug. Turns out a constant 12 mph breeze is not the same as a gentle cross draft, who knew? He laughed when I showed him a photo and said "well, that's what you get for listening to me." Has anyone else had outdoor advice that only works indoors, or am I the only one who fell for the fan trick? I'm back to using a wooden stake and wrapping twine around it, but now I'm curious what other balcony myths are out there.
