My neighbor's basil trick fixed my sad balcony harvest
Last June, Maria from the third floor saw my wilted herbs and handed me a handful of used coffee grounds, saying 'these bring the worms and the flavor.' I sprinkled them around my two tomato pots and the basil on my railing, and within 3 weeks the leaves doubled in size. She also told me to water at 6am instead of night, which cut down the mold I kept getting on my zucchini. Has anyone else tried coffee grounds on a windy balcony, or is it just dirt-dependent?

Oh wow, the coffee grounds thing totally reminds me of my grandma's old trick with eggshells! She used to crush them up and scatter them around her roses and swore the slugs hated crawling over the sharp bits. I tried it on my balcony last summer and honestly the slug damage did go down, though my neighbor said it was just the dry weather doing the work. Anyways the wild part is she also saved her bacon grease in a tin and poured a tiny bit at the base of her pepper plants, which sounds gross but those things went nuts. I never tried the coffee grounds myself but now I'm kinda tempted since my basil has been looking rough. The 6am watering tip makes a lot of sense too, I always watered at night and wondered why everything got spotty. Windy balconies are a whole different beast though, stuff dries out so fast up there.
