My neighbor said I was drowning my herbs, and she was right
I used to water my balcony basil and mint every single morning, figured more was better since the pots dry out fast in the LA sun. Last June my neighbor across the hall watched me for a week and finally said, 'You're drowning those poor things, check the soil first.' I thought she was just nosy, but I tried her trick of sticking my finger two inches down before watering. Turns out my basil roots were sitting in soggy dirt for weeks, which is why the leaves kept turning yellow at the bottom. I cut back to watering only when that top layer feels dry, about every 3 days now instead of daily. All three pots bounced back greener within two weeks. Has anyone else had to unlearn the 'more water equals better' habit on their balcony setup?
