My cherry tomato plant kept dropping blossoms on my 4th floor balcony in Chicago, so I tried shaking it every morning
Every blossom on my Better Bush plant turned brown and fell off for the first two weeks of July, and I figured it was hopeless with no bees up on the 4th floor. A guy at the plant store on Lawrence Ave mentioned that tomatoes need vibration to release pollen since wind does the job outdoors but a balcony blocks most of it. So I started tapping the main stem with two fingers every morning around 8am, just a quick buzz, and within 6 days I had 11 little green tomatoes forming. Now I do it while drinking my coffee and it takes like 10 seconds. Does anyone else hand pollinate on a high balcony, or am I the only one out here shaking my plants like a weirdo?
