My basil on the balcony went from sad sticks to a full bush in 5 weeks after one small change
Back in April my basil in the 8 inch pot on my north facing balcony was just three sad sticks with yellow leaves, and I almost gave up and bought a new plant. I moved it to the south end where it gets about 5 hours of direct sun and started pinching off the flower buds every couple days, and by week five it was a bushy plant I was cutting for pasta twice a week. Has anyone else had a plant totally turn around just from moving the pot a few feet, or am I fooling myself that it was the sun and not the pinching?
Man, hate to burst your bubble but I gotta push back on the sun being the hero here. Pinching those buds is honestly doing way more work than you think, that's the whole trick with basil. Every time you pop a flower off, the plant splits into two new branches right there, so you basically double your stems over and over. Five hours on a north balcony is not nothing but it's still on the low side, lots of basil wants six to eight. My money says if you'd left it north but kept pinching, you'd still have gotten a decent bush, just slower. The move helped for sure, but the pinching is what made it explode.
