Learned tomato plants can hear water running and it blew my mind

I was reading some random gardening blog last week while waiting for my basil to sprout and found out that tomato plants actually respond to the sound of water running nearby like they sense it and grow roots toward the sound. Now I'm just sitting here wondering if my cherry tomatoes on the balcony are secretly eavesdropping on my neighbor's watering routine. Has anyone else tested this or am I totally overthinking my little potted jungle?

Gently correct this one thing though: the study isn't totally settled on that whole "hearing water" idea. It actually found tomato plants respond to the specific frequencies in running water, not the water itself, which is a pretty big difference. They can pick up on vibrations in the soil from flowing water nearby, but nobody's really sure if they're eavesdropping or just reacting to a general sound cue. That said, it is still super cool that they can sense anything at all from a distance like that. Your cherry tomatoes on the balcony are probably fine unless your neighbor is playing aquatic sounds on repeat or something.

Wait, tomato plants are picking up on specific frequencies? That's wild - so they're basically tuning into the "sound" of water flowing like some kind of plant radio?
