Fed $60 to a self-watering planter that didn't work

Last spring I bought one of those self-watering pots with the reservoir at the bottom. Thought it would save me on hot days when I'm at work all day. Turns out the wicking system clogged after three weeks and my basil roots were sitting in sludge. Lost two tomato seedlings and a whole tray of lettuce sprouts before I figured it out. $60 gone, plus the plants. I've gone back to regular pots with a saucer and just checking them every morning before work. Has anyone else had luck with a specific self-watering setup that actually drains right?

Totally feel this. Same thing happened with mine last summer, the wicking string just gave up and everything got root rot. I yanked it out and went back to basic terracotta pots, honestly way less headache for way less money.
