Ditched the big bags for 5-gallon buckets and my herbs took off

I used to grow basil and mint in those long window boxes, but the soil dried out crazy fast on my 8th floor balcony in Austin. Last month I switched everything to 5-gallon food-grade buckets with holes drilled in the bottom, and the roots have way more room. The mint that always struggled is now taking over, and I only water every other day instead of twice a day. Anyone else tried switching containers and seen a big difference like this?

ugh the balcony drying thing is so real lmao. I had the same problem with those skinny planters, felt like I was watering them morning and night and they still looked sad. Switched to bigger buckets last spring and my rosemary went from barely hanging on to a literal bush. It's crazy how much of a difference root depth makes, I swear the soil stays moist for days now compared to before.
