Am I the only one who thinks grow lights don't need to be that expensive?

I see so many people on here dropping $100+ on fancy LED panels for their balcony setups. I mean I started with a $20 shop light from Home Depot last spring and my basil and lettuce grew just fine. Maybe it's just me but I feel like people overcomplicate it. I've got a tiny 4x2 balcony in Chicago and that cheap light gave me enough for salads all summer. Has anyone else tried budget lights and had it work out?

Buddy of mine tried keeping her succulents alive under a desk lamp from the thrift store... things got leggy real quick and stretched right toward the bulb.

Depends on the succulent, some of them just do that no matter what you do.
