The day an old lady at the farmers market told me my sourdough crumb looked like lace

She was buying a loaf and said it reminded her of her grandmother's baking in 1960s Portland, and now every time I score a loaf I wonder if I'm hitting that same delicate texture, has anyone else gotten a comment like that that just stuck with you?

And that's exactly the thing, it's not even about the baking itself sometimes. That woman at the library probably had a whole memory tied to that babka, like the smell of her aunt's kitchen or the way the dough felt. Now you're carrying a little piece of her history every time you make it, even if she never knows it. It's kind of a weird honor, having a stranger trust you with a memory like that.

The first time someone told me that was at a bake sale for our local library back in 2019. This older woman picked up my chocolate babka and said it reminded her of the one her aunt used to make for Passover in Brooklyn. I still think about that comment every time I make babka now. It's funny how a tiny comment from a stranger can just stick with you like that.
