My mother-in-law told me my pie crust was too tough and I'm still salty about it

She took one bite of my apple pie last Thanksgiving and said 'next time, don't overwork the dough, honey' in that sweet voice that cuts deep. Turns out she was right because I've been using a food processor on high for 2 minutes instead of just pulsing the butter in. Has anyone else gotten a brutally honest baking critique that actually made you better?

Oh honey, that "sweet voice that cuts deep" line hit me right in the gut... I know exactly what you mean. My own mother once told me my chocolate chip cookies were "a little... dense" and I couldn't eat one without hearing her voice for like two years. But you know what, she was right too - I was overmixing because I thought more mixing meant fluffier cookies. Now I stop the mixer the second the flour disappears and they're perfect.

Dig into that a little more, were you already doubting yourself on the cookies before she said anything, or was it totally out of left field? Because for me, the worst part is when that voice just confirms what you were already worried about in the first place. It's like you had a tiny crack and she just... made it a lot bigger.
