My grandma's sourdough starter died in the fridge after I forgot about it for 8 months
I opened the lid and this greenish liquid oozed out, smelled like old gym socks mixed with nail polish remover. She gave me that starter in 2019 and I killed it, feel like a total failure. Anyone else accidentally murder a family heirloom starter?

Man that's rough, but hey at least you can ask her for some more and start fresh again.

Ben's right but I bet your grandma would just laugh about it. She probably killed a starter or two herself back in the day before she got it perfect. Ask her for some of her backup batch she's got hidden in the back of her fridge, every experienced baker keeps emergency starter stashed away somewhere.
