TIL I hit 90% on a speech-to-text test in 2019 and swore my typing days were over, still waiting
I keep seeing people dump on old voice tech predictions and honestly I think they are being a little unfair. Back in 2019 I sat in a district training in Akron and we ran a demo where I read a full page out loud and the software caught 90 percent of the words right on the first pass. I remember texting my brother that night saying my keyboard was done for. Well, it is six years later and I still fix about a typo every other sentence when I dictate, plus it mangles any name that is not Sarah or Mike. The demo only worked because the room was dead quiet and I was reading a clean paragraph, not talking over a hallway full of kids. So yeah, the old "voice will replace typing by 2020" headlines look silly now, but the early numbers were real and that is why people fell for them. Has anyone actually gotten a dictation tool to work well with real background noise, or is 90 percent still the ceiling when things get loud?
