Showerthought: everyone laughs at the 1943 'no one will own a computer' quote, but the real bad prediction is the 1998 Wired cover that said the web would kill TV by 2008
I keep seeing the same tired quotes get dragged out here (the 1943 IBM one, the 1977 Ken Olsen line about homes and computers) and honestly the more interesting misses are the ones where the timeline was just off by a decade. Take the March 1998 Wired issue that ran a big piece saying interactive web TV would wipe out network broadcasts by 2008, which my old roommate in Austin taped to our fridge as a joke. We are 17 years past that and I still watched 4 hours of football on plain old cable last Sunday, plus a friend of mine in Denver pays $95 a month for a package with 200 channels he never opens. Web TV is dead, the networks are still here, so what old magazine cover do you all think aged the worst?
