Serious question, did anyone actually believe that whole 'no one will ever need more than 640K of RAM' line back in 1981?
I was cleaning out a box of old computer mags from my uncle's garage in Sacramento over the weekend and I found a 1981 issue of PC Magazine with that quote from Bill Gates, and I just sat there on the floor laughing. The actual line was about 640K being enough for anybody, and here I am in 2024 with a phone that has 8 gigs of RAM and still stutters when I open too many tabs. What kills me is that this wasn't even a wild claim at the time, people actually nodded along because 640K sounded like a mountain of space back then. My uncle paid like $3,000 for a machine with 64K and thought he was set for life, and he told me that same thing when I was a kid. I get that nobody can see the future, but it's wild how confident these guys were. Does anyone else have a stack of old mags or books with these kinds of quotes? I want to start a collection.
