Pro tip: that old 1956 IBM prediction about 5 computers in the world? I found the actual quote in a library book last week
Was killing time at the Cleveland Public Library and pulled a 1956 issue of a business magazine off the shelf. There it was in print, a quote from an IBM guy saying maybe 5 computers would ever sell worldwide. The kicker is how they priced it, a machine cost millions back then so nobody could picture one on a desk. Curious if anyone else has gone hunting for these old predictions in actual paper archives instead of just seeing screenshots online.
I did the same thing at the Seattle library a couple years back hunting for that quote. Best move was using the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, that big green index set, and just pulling the bound magazine volumes by year. Took me about two hours and a roll of dimes for the copier but I found the original page and it hits way different than a screenshot. Microfilm works too if the paper copy is shot, just ask the desk librarian where the machines are.
