My smart thermostat bricked itself and the app said "all good" the whole time
Woke up last Tuesday to a 58 degree house and a thermostat screen frozen on the little loading dots. The app still showed "Heating, your home is cozy" even while I was standing there in two hoodies. I killed the breaker for a full minute and it came back stuck on the same screen, so I pulled the unit off the wall and found the date stamp from a 2019 install. According to the company's own forum, a server side change in March left these older units unable to pull new firmware, and nobody thought to send a note to owners. Was I wrong to just swap it for a $25 basic dial model, or did anyone else get blindsided by their "smart" gear quietly dropping support?
