My brother in law bet me $50 that voice dictation would replace typing by 2005, and I finally paid up last month
Back around 1999 I clipped a newspaper column predicting we would all be talking to our computers within five years, and I kept it on my fridge for 20 years mostly to annoy my brother in law. He bet me 50 bucks that dictation software would kill the keyboard by 2005, and I finally handed him the cash last month at a family cookout in Sacramento because he kept bringing it up every single year. The wild part is we both kind of forgot what the bet actually proved. Here we are in 2024 and I still type everything, still hit backspace when autocorrect turns 'meeting' into 'meating,' and still watch my uncle yell at his phone in his truck and get 'send toes' instead of 'send notes.' I even tried a dictation app for a week to be fair, and it turned my grocery list into a poem about llamas. So who really won, the guy who predicted the future or the guy still using his thumbs? Curious if anyone else has an old magazine or clipping they held onto just to win an argument.
Did your brother in law actually win though, since voice typing is built into every phone now and people use it way more than you want to admit? You're typing this on a keyboard, sure, but you just told us your uncle yells at his phone in a truck all day long.
