Hot take: I spent $75 on a 'future-proof' HDMI cable in 2012

I bought a Monster HDMI cable back in 2012 because the sales guy swore it would handle 4K and 3D for the next decade. Cost me $75 at a Best Buy in Austin. Now I'm using a $8 cable from Amazon that does the same thing, and that Monster one is just sitting in a drawer. Anyone else get tricked into buying premium cables back then?

Still have mine too, kind of a badge of shame at this point. Did the sales guy really convince you it was worth it, or were you just hoping the price meant better quality?

Oh man, the real trick was how that cable probably did have better shielding for interference, but most people's setups never actually needed it. The whole "future proof" promise was just them betting you wouldn't return it before your TV actually needed those specs. I still think about that markup when I see the Monster logo at garage sales now.
