Unpopular opinion: I turned off auto-updates last month and my machine is finally quiet
I've been running the same home office setup since 2021 and around last month I finally got tired of the random restarts. I went into services and set Windows Update to manual on my main rig, and I also killed the auto update on my browser and phone apps while I was at it. This is the first time in about 3 years that I haven't walked into my office at 7am to find a reboot screen or a changed menu. My scan tool software still runs fine and my invoice program hasn't broken once since I froze it. Everyone keeps saying I'm asking for a virus but I keep my stuff behind a router and I don't click weird links. Has anyone else tried just locking everything down and updating on your own schedule, and did anything actually break later?

I did the same thing about a year ago on my work laptop and nothing has blown up yet. I just set a reminder on my calendar to run updates every couple months when I have a slow afternoon. The only thing that got weird was one program that needed a newer version of something, but that was an easy fix once I updated it.
