TIL my local arcade closed because nobody wanted to pay $1 for a game that fit in their pocket
I was at the last night of the Pinball Palace in Toledo about 6 months ago when the owner unplugged the Addams Family machine for the final time. He said the rent went up to $4,200 a month and the same high school kids who used to feed quarters into Street Fighter now just play free clones on their phones during lunch. That hit me hard because I had been one of those kids in 2003, and I never went back once I got a smartphone. Now I wonder if we all traded real places for stuff that disappears when the app shuts down. Anyone else watch a spot they loved die because the cheap version won?
