The "just use your phone" advice that wrecked my podcast audio
My buddy Mike told me to skip buying a mic and record episodes on my iPhone for the first 6 months to save cash. Spent 14 episodes doing that. Then I hired an editor who charged me $120 just to clean up background noise from each file because the room echo and keyboard clicks were everywhere. Barely fixed it. Should have just rented a $50 mic from the local shop in Portland and learned the basics. Anyone else get burned by the "you already have the gear" crowd?

Did you ever think about how the phone advice messed with your actual show format though? Like, 14 episodes in, you probably got used to talking in a certain way, kinda loose and whatever. Then you finally get a real mic and suddenly your voice sounds dry as hell because you're not fighting the room anymore. That switch can wreck your delivery more than the noise cleanup costs, honestly. Happened to a buddy of mine who did a true crime thing on his laptop, once he upgraded he sounded like a different person and people noticed. Sometimes the bad audio is what makes you sound human and relatable, not always a curse.
